Murphs Gaslight

Murphs Gaslight started back in 1976, inspired by Ralph Murphy, and has actually been the go to place for “The” best Pan Fried Chicken in the desert ever since. And speaking from someone who really never liked Fried Chicken, I can honestly say that their Pan Fried Chicken has turned my taste buds around and now I crave the stuff….well at least their stuff. Succulent and golden fried to perfection in old Southern tradition, their recipe has been high on the menu of Pan Fried Chicken connoisseurs for over 40 years.

Murphs Gaslight sits next to Bermuda Dunes airport, and has a mixed cliental of mature desert dwellers, tourists and families. The spot has an illustrious history, and used to be a place where pilots would hang out back in the day ( circa late 1950's) between flights, complete with a swimming pool and tennis courts.

The menu at Murphs consists of hearty meals such as fly off the bone Baby Back Ribs and Chicken Pot Pie among others, but it’s their excellent Pan Fried Chicken that is the shining star at Murphs.

Thier cozy pub style bar is inviting and offers a variety of drinks as well as bar food items.

Murphs Gaslight is a Coachella Valley treasure, and a definite must for home style Pan Fried Chicken, comfort food and old school local fun.

Smoke Tree BBQ Bar & Grill

                                                                                                                          rsz imag0281

BBQ is one of those all American food staples, along with Fried Chicken, Burgers and Apple Pie. Now when I mean BBQ, I’m talking the REAL deal, slow smoked meats, great sauces, and lots of napkins.

It’s a craving that I get on a regular basis, the need for succulent barbequed meat, especially pulled pork, which is hands down my favorite. Located in a strip mall off of Hwy 111 a couple doors down from 7-11 in Palm Desert, I have found my go to BBQ place in the Coachella Valley, Smoke Tree BBQ Bar & Grill. The location doesn’t exactly stand out. You almost have to know that it’s there, but once you do, you’ll be going back repeatedly.

Owned by restaurateur Joe Funkey, the restaurant is one of two locations. The other and original, is located in the Smoke Tree Shopping Center in Palm Springs.

The restaurants seating is comfortable, with a sort of a country industrial feel. The bar seems to be the focal point with ample seating. Where draft beer, bottled beer and wine are served. A large chalk board hovers over the bar area, presenting the menu offerings.

Besides my beloved Carolina Smoked Pulled Pork, Smoke Tree BBQ has many other menu items that will perk up your taste buds. Items such as their Beef Brisket, Burnt Ends, Smoked Chicken and Angus Prime Beef Ribs are BBQ fan pleasers. They also have Burgers and Po’Boys, as well as Salads to round off the menu. But let’s not be coy, their BBQ is the star. Sides such as cheesier than cheesy Mac n Cheese and Cornmeal Fried Okra, among others are set up to compliment your meal.

And if you like a little sauce to go on your BBQ, Smoke Tree delivers with homemade masterpieces like their Ghost Pepper BBQ Sauce (my fave).

Face it, theirs is nothing like the sweet and savory taste and smell of phenomenal BBQ. Smoke Tree BBQ Bar & Grill has hit the proverbial BBQ nail on the head with their food, and a visit there will certainly rate high as the best BBQ you’ve ever had.

Enjoy Coffee at Koffi

rsz imag1993

The first Koffi location opened on North Palm Canyon in Palm Springs in 2002, followed by a second in on South Palm Canyon in 2008 and a third in Rancho Mirage in 2013. The Koffi encounter supersedes any other coffee house establishment in the desert. What pushes Koffi over the top comes from a multitude of reasons. The ambience has a modern element, but subtly still exudes a comfortably cozy community feel, without having to submit to having any overstuffed chairs or a brown wall in its realm.

But it is not the décor that Koffi provides that brings coffee consumers back in droves, it is without question their exceptional coffee itself. Upon entering the shop, you are immediately blanketed with the perfume of coffee…reassured that your decision to choose Koffi as your designated coffee solution was a good one. They offer up a variety of coffee concoctions to satisfy your caffeine needs. And that being said, they also cater to those who are caffeine challenged like The Palm Springs Local (caffeine and I are not friends). I have found that Koffi is the only place that I can order a decaffeinated coffee drink and not have regular coffee effects afterwards (i.e., jitters, speeded speech, hallucinations, etc). The reason behind the clean decaf is that Koffi has decaf that is processed naturally through a Swiss water process and not chemically like other coffee houses. Whish brings me to the main point of their success. Koffi roasts their coffee beans themselves in their Rancho Mirage facility. The beans that they get are from organic growers, making a world of flavor difference for Koffi consumers.

Koffi concocts their fabulous roasted coffee into a variety of fashions. From espresso, to hot or iced and blended coffee drink  specialties (their mocha Frappuccino is a smooth sensation, whipped cream topping is a must). They also have non coffee drinks such as teas and tea lattes as well as fruit smoothies, and they do offer soy options as well.

If you’re looking for something to accompany your Koffi beverage selection, their food offerings will not disappoint you. Koffi has an impressive selection of breakfast and lunch items, including breakfast sandwiches and lunch wraps (try the crowd pleasing sundried tomato chicken wrap w/pesto). And what about gourmet cookies, muffins and more? Well, they have those too, all house made and simply sublime (their wild Maine blueberry muffin and zucchini loaf are an experience alone).

Koffi has been and welcomed addition to the Coachella Valley’s coffee joint scene, a bright target on the coffee map and definite favorite of The Palm Springs Local.

George's Bar & Grill (World Famous Burgers and Insults)

The truth is, you can find burgers anywhere. They come in a variety of ways with different toppings and such. But the burgers at George's Bar & Grill in Cathedral City stand out not only because of the care and attention that the freshly daily made patties receive, it's the only burger haven in the Coachella Valley that you can get a side of insults with your meal...but only if you deserve it.

George's was started back in 1969 by George Steven Marinko and is now run by his son Ed, who has continued the famous burger and insult tradition. The burgers at George's are hands down delicious, prepared proudly by Ed himself. Which most likely adds to the insult part: respect the burger and you'll be safe. To protect yourself, don't do things like adding chili to your burger or fries unless you order it that way, and ketchup, well that only belongs on the fries.

Believe it or not, people come from around the world in hopes of getting insulted by the man himself. It's a little twisted perhaps, but all in fun and definitly a Palm Springs Local favorite!

Maxcy's Grill

If you're looking for home style food in family coffee feel, than Maxcy's Grill is the place for you. They offer up a menu featuring breakfast, lunch and dinner items. And the great thing is, you can order any item at anytime...Maxcy's doesn't meal time discriminate.

The Palm Springs Locals favorite has to be their Chili & Cheddar Cheese Omelet (with avocado), a magically light and fluffy creation. And the pancakes, a force to be reckoned with.

With four locations to serve you (La Quinta, Palm Springs, Indio, Coachella), Maxcy's is a must, and a true asset to Coachella Valley Eateries.
