The End of The Palm Springs Follies

By Denise Ortuno Neil

After 23 years one of Palm Springs most successful attractions will close its doors. The Palm Springs Follies, which showcased talented mature adults will have its final performance on Sunday, May 18th 2014. The show has attracted millions of spectators during its impressive run.

It all started back in 1991, highlighting the cream of the crop in performers from ages 50 to 80 plus. It is housed at the historic Plaza Theater in Palm Springs. I had the pleasure of seeing the Palm Springs Follies in action last season and it was a pure treat. To see these agile performers dance and sing was amazing. The lovely ladies of the Follies could stand next to the most fit 20 years old and give them serious competition. They dress in vegas style showgirl costumes and their male counter parts look equaly dashing in the finest tuxedos. It is quite the sight.

I urge readers to check out this iconic show before they close their doors forever...it is an attraction that you don't want to miss!!

Mysterious Mountian Holiday Lights

By Denise Ortuno Neil,

There are all kinds of deep seeded mysteries in Palm Springs. Some of them urban legends, some of them actual unsolved mysteries. We have the infamous tunnels, the trolls under the bridge, the Tahquitz Witch and many more. Now we have a new one. Over the weekend some mysterious, yet holiday looking lights appeared up on Lykken Trail in Palm Springs. The lights were in different colors and seemed to have a distinctive shape. I first found out about it through a Facebook community page, Palm Springs Neighborhoods Group. The post quickly gained steam as the group came up with different scenarios of what the lights were, why they were there and who was responsible. We came up with all kinds of plots...UFO's, artists, pranksters..we threw around the ball for quite a while. What ever it was, it was fun to swim in the seas of our imaginations.

Sweet Transvestite

Sweet TransvestiteBy Denise Ortuno Neil

I was a pre-teen when I first heard of the Rocky Horror Picture Show. My sister Colette had long been into the cult movie craze and as the curious little girl that I was, I followed along. My sister even convinced the principle at Palm Desert Middle School to let her teach the "Time Warp" to all of my classmates during P.E. class one day. It was a great success! I'm sure todays parents would not allow such a thing to occur knowing the premise of the film, but this was in the early 80's, and how happy I am that I grew up back then.

I quickly became a fan of the film, learning every song on the sound track, singing and dancing with zeal  every time I'd hear it, and with my sister in the house, it was alot. The Rocky Horror Picture Show debuted in 1975. The creation came from Richard O'Brien and starred Tim Curry, Susan Sarrandon and Barry Boswick among the other talented cast. It has been hailed the longest running film musical ever.

Improv GamesImprovisational comedy has been a constant staple of the art, and the quintessencial measurment of comedic talent, as it takes quick thinking and extreme creativity to pull off this kind of comedy. Shows like Saturday Night Live and Who's Line is it Anyway are great examples of classic Improv.

The talented drama students of C.O.D. will be joined by professional performers including the Director himself, Tres Dean. Audience members will have free reign over the cast as they call out directions, character suggestions and situations. The cast is the clay and the audience the sculptors.
